Employment Information

Located in the southern-central part of Africa, Botswana has a population of 200 million. The literacy rate of Botswana’s population is high, and English is the official language here, so it is commonly spoken throughout the country.

  • The standard working hours in Botswana are separated into public and private sector.
    • Public sector hours usually equate to 7.30am to 12:45pm and 1:30pm to 4:30pm.
    • Private sector hours are usually 8am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm.
  • All working hours are usually on a Monday to Friday basis.
  • Employees are usually granted 15 days of holiday each year, consisting of 8 days paid and 7 days unpaid.
  • Employees are entitled to 21 days of sick leave each year.
  • Maternity leave is provided; this consists of 6 weeks before the birth and 6 weeks after.
  • Termination of an employment contract is prohibited during an employee’s maternity leave.
  • A minimum of 50% of the employee’s salary must be paid by the employer during maternity leave.
  • One hour a day of breast-feeding is permitted for 6 months following the birth.
  • Renewable employment and self-employment permits are issued for expatriates on a 5- or 10-year basis.

Taxation

Botswana has a low tax regime; this is comprised of:

  • 22% Company Tax
  • 10% Dividend Withholding Tax
  • 15% Manufacturing Company Tax
  • 15% International Financial Services Company Tax
  • 25% Highest Marginal Personal Tax
  • A Development Approval Order may be obtained from the Finance Ministry for a special tax dispensation
  • 5% if you locate your manufacturing and distribution business in the SEZA (Special Economic Zone Areas)

Cultural Information

English is the constitutional language of Botswana, whereas Setswana is the official local language. Botswana is a safe country in Africa, and visitors can expect a friendly and personable culture amongst the locals.

Christianity is the majority religion in Botswana; however, many traditional Botswana religions are present amongst minority groups throughout the country.
