Financial Year Dates

The Financial year in Mauritius runs from 1st July to 30th June.

Minimum Wage

  • Minimum wage in Mauritius depends on the type of industry:
  • Non-export industries: Minimum wage is 15,000 MUR per month
  • Export Industry: Minimum wage is 10,875 MUR per month
  • Agricultural: Minimum wage varies depending on the type of work and experience level.
  • Apprentices and trainees receive a reduced wage

Standard working hours

The standard working hours in Mauritius ranges from 40 to 45 hours per week, with many employers offering flexible arrangements. This flexibility can significantly enhance work/life balance for employees. Employees have the option to work either a 5-day week consisting of 9-hour days, or a 6-day week working 8 hours for 5 days of the week, and 5 hours on the 6th day.

Overtime

Overtime is paid at 150% of the employee’s standard wage. If an employee works an additional two hours to their normal working hours, their employee must provide either a free meal or pay a meal allowance of 85 MUR.

Holiday Allowance

Employees are entitled to a minimum of 22 days of paid annual leave, in addition to sick leave. This generous leave policy supports employee wellbeing and encourages a healthy work environment.

Sick Leave

In Mauritius, employees are entitled to 15 days paid sick leave per year following 12 months of employment. A medical certificate is required for any longer periods of absence.

Maternity & Paternity Leave

The maternity leave in Mauritius is 14 weeks, while paternity leave is 10 days. These provisions reflect the country’s commitment to supporting families, which can improve employee satisfaction and loyalty.

Public Holiday

Social Contributions

Employers must contribute to the Contribution Sociale Generalisee (CSG) and the National Savings Fund (NSF). These contributions ensure that employees receive retirement benefits and financial security. Both applies to all employees and self-employed workers, but excludes anyone working in the public sector. Employers must contribute 2.5% of remuneration to the NSF, and a monthly levy of 1.5% of basic salaries for each employee. Employees are required to pay a 1% levy. Public sector employees participate in the Public Sector Defined Contribution Scheme, which both themselves and the government contribute towards. The rates differ depending on when the individual joined the public sector. CSG rates are:

Income Tax

Regardless of their nationality, individuals are subject to tax from all income sources within Mauritius. Residents are liable for Income Tax on their worldwide income that is received in Mauritius.
