Working Hours

Pakistan’s working hours are a maximum of 9 hours a day for 48 hours a week.

There is no provision on the maximum amount of overtime hours that can be worked, however, employees who work more than the 9 hours per day or 48 hours per week are entitled to overtime pay. Overtime pay is 200% of regular pay and 300% during holidays.

The usual probation period in Pakistan is 3 months.

Holiday and Sick Leave

Employees in Pakistan are entitled to the following leaves:

Privilege leave: Employees in Pakistan are entitled to 14 days of paid privilege leave. They gain this following the completion of 12 months of service. Employees are paid their normal wages during this leave.

Sick Leave: 10 days of casual leave are provided upon contingent situations such as sudden illness or any other urgent purpose. Employees receive 16 days on full pay and 8 days on half pay for the sick leave but should provide a medical certificate certified by a doctor.

Maternity Leave: Mothers receive 3 months of paid maternity leave, with 6 weeks of mandatory post-natal leave. To receive maternity leave, the employee should be working for the same employer for at least 4 months before she gives birth.


Businesses and employees in Pakistan should be aware of the following taxes:

  • Employer Payroll Tax: Employer Liability (up to) 12.9% (capped very low) + health Insurance contributions
  • Employee Income Tax: Social Security (up to) 8.9%
  • Employee Income Tax: 1-35%

Cultural Information

Pakistan is home to a very diverse culture with a variety of languages. Pakistan’s population is very friendly and holds family values to a high regard. Listening to and making music are also both big parts of Pakistan’s culture.

Gender segregation still exists in Pakistan, and expats in the country should be aware of this. Despite this, the people are very hospitable, resilient, and hard working.

Islam makes up a large majority (97%) of the nation’s population, and regular praying is embodied into the nation’s culture. Friday is also a holy day in Pakistan, and everything is closed on this day.

Urdu and English are both the nation’s official languages. It is not uncommon for Pakistani businesses to use English as their primary language.
