Financial Year Dates

Slovakia’s financial year runs from January 1st to December 31st.

Minimum Wage

As of 2025, the national minimum wage in Slovakia is EUR 770 per month based on a 40-hour working week.

Standard working hours

The standard workweek in Slovakia is 40 hours, generally divided into five 8-hour workdays.

Overtime

Overtime is compensated at a minimum of 125% of the regular hourly rate. Overtime worked during weekends or public holidays is paid at 150%, and night work is compensated at an additional premium of 40% of the minimum wage. Overtime should not exceed 150 hours per year unless agreed in writing.

Holiday Allowance

Employees are entitled to a minimum of four weeks of paid annual leave per year. Employees over 33 years of age or with dependent children receive at least five weeks. Public holidays are additional to annual leave.

Sick Leave

Employees are entitled to sick leave benefits from the first day of illness. The employer pays 25% of the regular wage for the first three days and 55% from days 4 to 10. From day 11 onwards, sickness benefits are covered by the Social Insurance Agency.

Maternity & Paternity Leave

Female employees are entitled to 34 weeks of maternity leave (extended to 37 weeks for single mothers), paid at 75% of their average daily wage. Fathers are entitled to 28 weeks of paid paternity leave, which can be shared with the mother.

Slovakia observes the following national holidays:

Social Contributions

Both employers and employees in Slovakia contribute to the country’s social security and health insurance systems.

Employers:

  • Social Security Contributions: approximately 35.2% of gross salary
  • Health Insurance: 10% of gross salary

Employees:

  • Social Security Contributions: approximately 13.4% of gross salary
  • Health Insurance: 4% of gross salary

These contributions cover pensions, healthcare, unemployment, sickness, and accident insurance.

Income Tax

As of 2025, Slovakia applies a progressive income tax rate:

  • Income up to EUR 47,537.98: 19%
  • Income above EUR 47,537.98: 25%

Residents are taxed on worldwide income, while non-residents are taxed only on income earned in Slovakia.

Health Care

Slovakia operates a universal public healthcare system funded by mandatory health insurance contributions. The system provides comprehensive coverage, including hospital care, specialist consultations, and prescriptions. Many employees choose supplementary private health insurance for faster access and additional services.

Visas

Foreign nationals planning to work in Slovakia must obtain the relevant visa or permit, depending on their nationality and purpose of stay.

Common options include:

  • Temporary Residence Permit for Employment: Required for non-EU nationals to live and work in Slovakia for up to two years, renewable.
  • EU Blue Card: For highly qualified non-EU workers, valid for up to four years.
  • Business Visa: For entrepreneurs or investors engaging in commercial activities.

EU/EEA and Swiss citizens do not require a work permit but must register their stay with local authorities if residing for more than 90 days.

13th salary?

Slovakia does not have a legal requirement for a 13th salary, but it is common for employers to offer a discretionary annual bonus or additional payment around Christmas or mid-year.
