Financial Year Dates

The financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March the following year.

Minimum Wage

As of May 1 2025 the statutory minimum wage is HKD 42.10 per hour

Standard working hours

The standard workweek ranges between 40–48 hours, usually divided over 5–6 days. Flexible arrangements are common in tech and finance sectors.

Overtime

In Hong Kong, there is no legal requirement for employers to pay overtime under the Employment Ordinance. However, many employers include overtime pay provisions in employment contracts, often at a rate of at least 1.5 times the standard hourly rate.

Holiday Allowance

In Hong Kong, employees are entitled to 12 statutory holidays in 2025. In addition to these, employees earn annual leave based on their length of service, starting with 7 days in the first year and increasing up to 14 days. 

Sick Leave

Employees accumulate paid sick days based on their length of employment, with the first 12 months granting 2 paid sick days per month and subsequent months granting 4 paid sick days per month.

Maternity & Paternity Leave

Hong Kong’s maternity leave remains at 14 weeks of paid leave, as per the Employment Ordinance. Paternity leave is 4 weeks of paid leave.

Social Contributions

In Hong Kong, social contributions primarily refer to the mandatory contributions to the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) scheme. Both employers and employees are required to contribute 5% of the employee’s relevant income, subject to a monthly cap of HK$1,500. 

Income Tax

Hong Kong has a progressive salaries tax:

  • 2% on first HKD 50,000
  • 6% on next HKD 50,000
  • 10% on next HKD 50,000
  • 14% on next HKD 50,000
  • 17% on income above HKD 200,000

Alternatively, individuals can elect a flat 15% standard rate.

Health Care

Hong Kong has a dual-track healthcare system. Public services are heavily subsidized, while private care offers faster access and higher quality. Employers are not legally required to provide health insurance but typically supplement MPF contributions with optional private health benefits.

Visas

Visit/Transit Visa:

For those visiting Hong Kong for tourism or transit purposes, according to the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

Hong Kong BN(O) Visa:

For BN(O) status holders and their family members from Hong Kong, enabling them to live, work, and study in the UK with a pathway to settlement and citizenship.

Hong Kong offers various other visa categories, including those for employment, investment, and education.
