Working in Jersey

Financial Year Dates

Jersey’s financial year runs from January 1st to December 31st.

Minimum Wage

As of April 1st, 2025, the minimum wage in Jersey is £13 per hour.

Standard working hours

The typical full-time working week in Jersey is 37 to 40 hours, generally Monday to Friday. Start and finish times may vary by sector, with flexible working increasingly common in office-based roles.

Overtime

There is no statutory entitlement to extra pay for overtime in Jersey unless outlined in the employment contract. Many employers offer time off in lieu or a premium rate (typically 1.5x) as part of best practice.

Holiday Allowance

Holiday is calculated in weeks, not days:

    • 5-day/week worker = 15 days annual leave minimum
    • 3-day/week part-time worker = 9 days annual leave minimum

Employers may offer more than the statutory minimum as per the employment contract.

Sick Leave

There is no statutory requirement for paid sick leave in Jersey. Entitlement depends on the employment contract. However, employees may claim short-term incapacity benefits from Social Security after three days of absence, if eligible.

Maternity & Paternity Leave

  • Maternity Leave: Eligible employees are entitled to up to 52 weeks of maternity leave (6 weeks paid if qualifying under social security).
  • Paternity Leave: Fathers or partners can take up to 52 weeks, with 6 weeks potentially paid, depending on social security contributions.

  • Good Friday
  • Easter Monday
  • Early May Bank Holiday
  • Liberation Day (9th May – unique to Jersey)

If a public holiday falls on a weekend, it is usually not carried forward unless specified in the employment contract.

  • Contributions begin at age 16 and stop at pensionable age.

  • Alternative Tax Calculation: Some residents may be taxed at an effective rate of 26% on a portion of their income.
  • No capital gains tax, inheritance tax, or VAT in Jersey.

Health Care

Jersey operates a co-funded healthcare system. Residents contribute via Social Security and pay subsidised rates for GP services, prescriptions, and hospital treatment. Private healthcare is also available.

Employers are not required to provide private health insurance, but many include it as a benefit for senior staff or international hires.

Visas

Jersey is part of the Common Travel Area and operates its own immigration controls.

Work Permits

Foreign nationals (excluding UK and Irish citizens) require a Work Permit along with a Housing and Work Licence before employment. Sponsorship by a Jersey-based employer is required.

Business Visitors

Short-term business activities may not require a work permit but must comply with immigration and housing regulations.

13th salary

Jersey does not require a statutory 13th-month salary. However, bonuses and performance-related pay are common in sectors like finance and legal.

Cultural Information

Jersey blends British formality with a relaxed island lifestyle. Business culture is respectful and conservative, especially in finance, though start-ups adopt a more casual tone. Meetings are punctual and email is the preferred communication method.

  • Religion: Predominantly Christian.
  • Cuisine: Jersey is famous for seafood (especially oysters and lobster), creamy dairy products, and dishes like bean crock.
