Financial Year Dates
Guyana’s financial year runs from 1 January to 31 December.
Minimum Wage
As of 2025, the national minimum wage in Guyana is GYD 60,147 per month, based on a standard full-time schedule.
Standard working hours
The standard workweek in Guyana is 40 hours, typically spread across five 8-hour days.
Overtime
Overtime is compensated at a minimum rate of 150% of the employee’s regular hourly wage. Work on Sundays or public holidays is generally paid at double time.
Holiday Allowance
Employees are entitled to a minimum of 12 working days of paid annual leave after one year of continuous service.
Sick Leave
Employees are generally entitled to up to 12 weeks of paid sick leave per year, with payment covered by the employer for the first period and by the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) thereafter. A valid medical certificate is required.
Maternity & Paternity Leave
Female employees are entitled to 13 weeks of maternity leave, with at least six weeks taken after childbirth. Maternity benefits are paid through the NIS system. Paternity leave is not mandated by law, though some employers provide it voluntarily.

Social Contributions
Guyana’s social security system is managed by the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), which covers pensions, maternity benefits, and sickness payments. Both employers and employees contribute based on gross earnings.

- 8.4% of gross salary (NIS contributions)
Employee Contributions
- 5.6% of gross salary (NIS contributions)
These contributions are subject to a monthly maximum insurable earnings cap set by the NIS.
Income Tax
Guyana’s personal income tax system is progressive:
- Income up to GYD 100,000 per month is taxed at 28%
- Income exceeding GYD 100,000 per month is taxed at 40%
Employers are responsible for deducting and remitting income tax to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) through the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) system.
Health Care
Healthcare in Guyana is provided through both public and private systems. Public healthcare is free at the point of service, though facilities and quality can vary. Many employers offer private health insurance to ensure broader coverage and faster access to medical care. The NIS also provides limited health and maternity benefits to insured employees.
Visas
Foreign nationals intending to work in Guyana require a valid work permit. The most common types include:
- Work Permit: Required for foreign employees hired by Guyanese companies; typically valid for one year.
- Business Visa: For short-term business visits, meetings, or investment activities.
- Residence Permit: Available for long-term stays and renewable upon continued employment or investment.
All work permits are issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs and require sponsorship from a local employer.
13th salary?
